Lara Trump, President-elect Trump’s daughter in law and former Republican National Committee (RNC) co-chair, removed her name from consideration to replace Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.).
“After an incredible amount of thought, contemplation, and encouragement from so many, I have decided to remove my name from consideration for the United States Senate,” Trump wrote in a Saturday post on the social platform X.
“I could not have been more honored to serve as RNC co-chair during the most high-stakes election of our lifetime and I’m truly humbled by the unbelievable support shown to me by the people of our country, and here in the great state of Florida,” she later added.
The incoming president announced Rubio as his Secretary of State choice in November. Earlier this month, Lara Trump stepped down as RNC co-chair to “heavily consider” taking on the role in Congress’s upper chamber.
Florida Gov.Ron Desantis (R) will choose Rubio’s replacement, if the senator is confirmed to lead the State Department. That replacement would serve until 2026, when a special election will be held to determine who will serve the remaining two years of Rubio’s term.
“In the meantime, I wish Governor DeSantis the best of luck with this appointment,” she said.
She also alluded to forthcoming announcement in January, urging followers to “stay tuned.”
Lara Trump Says She Will Not Seek to Replace Rubio in Senate
Lara Trump, the daughter-in-law of former President Donald Trump and a prominent figure in Republican circles, has announced that she will not be running for the U.S. Senate to replace Marco Rubio. Speculation about her potential candidacy had been circulating for months, as political observers pondered whether she would leverage her name recognition and support within the GOP to make a bid for the seat.
Speaking to reporters on Thursday, Trump addressed the rumors directly. “While I’m deeply committed to serving the American people and advancing conservative values, I’ve decided that this is not the right time for me to seek a Senate seat,” she said. “My focus will remain on supporting Republican candidates and ensuring our party’s success in upcoming elections.”
A Calculated Decision
The decision not to enter the race comes as the Republican Party faces a critical juncture. With control of the Senate hanging in the balance, the GOP is keen to field strong candidates who can secure victories in key battleground states. Trump’s decision also allows Rubio, a seasoned senator with significant political clout, to concentrate on his re-election campaign without the potential for an intraparty challenge.
Political analysts suggest that Trump’s decision was likely influenced by several factors, including the logistical demands of a Senate campaign and her young family. Lara Trump, married to Eric Trump, has two children and has often spoken about the importance of family in her life. “Running for office is a huge commitment, and it’s clear that she’s prioritized her family and other responsibilities,” said political strategist Laura Simmons.
Continued Influence in GOP Politics
Despite her decision to forgo a Senate run, Lara Trump remains an influential figure within the Republican Party. She played a significant role in her father-in-law’s 2016 and 2020 presidential campaigns and is a frequent commentator on conservative media platforms. Her ability to energize the party’s base and connect with grassroots supporters ensures that she will continue to be a key player in GOP politics.
“Lara has a unique ability to mobilize voters and communicate the Republican message effectively,” said John Carter, a Florida GOP official. “Even without running for office, she’ll be a powerful force in shaping the party’s future.”
Rubio’s Path Forward
Senator Marco Rubio, who has represented Florida in the Senate since 2011, is widely expected to seek re-election. Known for his expertise in foreign policy and economic issues, Rubio has remained a prominent voice within the Republican Party. With Lara Trump out of the running, Rubio’s path to securing the GOP nomination becomes significantly clearer.
In a statement responding to the news, Rubio expressed gratitude for Trump’s support. “Lara has been an incredible advocate for conservative values and a tireless supporter of our party. I look forward to continuing to work together to advance the issues that matter most to Floridians,” he said.
Looking Ahead
Lara Trump’s decision marks a pivotal moment in Florida’s political landscape and underscores the importance of strategic decision-making within the GOP. While she may not be entering the Senate race, her influence in Republican politics is far from over. As the party gears up for the 2024 elections, Lara Trump’s role as a campaigner and advocate will undoubtedly remain significant.
